The Sydney
and Selected Areas Skilled Shortage List (SSASSL)
contains skilled occupations where there is a demand
in Sydney, Gosford, Newcastle or Wollongong, for
people with the necessary skill level to work in
these occupations. From
8 September 2004, people applying for a Skilled
Australian Sponsored visa (class BQ subclass 138)
who have a sponsor living in Sydney, Gosford, Newcastle
or Wollongong (as defined by postcode) must nominate
a skilled occupation that is on the SSASSL.
The applicant's nominated
occupation will need to be on the SSASSL at the
time the application is lodged and when it is assessed.

From 1 April
2005 the passmark for Skilled Independent Overseas
Student (Subclass 880) visa applications will increase

Affairs, Senator the Hon Amanda Vanstone, announced
this increase on 1 April 2004. The

no transitional provisions in place to allow Subclass
497 visa holders to be assessed against the pre-1
April 2005 pass mark from 1 April 2005.
